Elevating Pinehurst History, Engagement & Improvement

The Village of Pinehurst is a quaint New England-style village - a resort community with 17,651 (2020 estimate) residents - the largest municipality in Moore County.  It is home of the historic Pinehurst Resort, which includes No.1 through No. 9 golf courses including its best known course, Pinehurst No. 2, which was designed by Donald Ross and completed in 1907.   Pinehurst No. 2 hosted the Men's U.S. Open in 1999, 2005, 2014, and will host the Open in 2024, 2029, 2035, 2041 and 2047.  Pinehurst No.2 also hosted the U.S. Women's Open Championships in 2014, and the Pine Needles Lodge and Golf Club adjacent to the Village will host the tournament in 2022. Pinehurst is the only golf-related designation of its kind in the United States.

The downtown central village of Pinehurst, including the resort complexes, is a National Historic Landmark District, designated in 1996 for its landscape design (by Frederick Law Olmsted) and its significance in the history of golf in the United States.  The Lloyd-Howe House, and Pinehurst Race Track are also listed on the National Register of Historic Places.  Pinehurst has been designated as the "Home of American Golf" by the United States Golf Association, which announced a second headquarters in the village in 2020.

The area is also known for its strong equestrian community, has hosted the former Stoneybrook Steeplechase, and currently maintains the Pinehurst Race Track established in 1915. The equestrian activity here is always in full force as the Sandhills has become the winter home to more than 30,000 horses including trotters, thoroughbreds, carriage horses and more.

Pinehurst history starts in 1895, when, Boston Philanthropist and businessman James Walker Tufts, sold his thriving Soda Fountain Company and purchased 5,980 acres (2,400 ha), of land for an average $1.24 per acre in the North Carolina Sandhills, with the vision of building a "health resort for people of modest means."  The sellers mocked him afterward, saying it “isn’t worth but 85 cents an acre.  Originally it was called Tuftstown during its development - later, Tuftstown became the Village of Pinehurst, and home of the Pinehurst Resort.

Pinehurst history includes Annie Oakley who, along with her husband Frank Butler, made Pinehurst their home after leaving the Buffalo Bill Wild West Show. Annie taught shooting to over 15,000 people and gave regular exhibitions at the famed Gun Club and hotel.

Pinehurst offers unparalleled resort-level accommodations and a unique combination of cultural, recreational, dining, and shopping experiences. Its professional services and medical facilities are among the best in the world. The "Village of Pinehurst" is ranked as the 4th most charming small towns in North Carlonia.
